Good morning y'all! I hope everyone had a great week and is ready for the weekend. We're expecting snow Sunday so hopefully we don't get much but they keep changing the amount so who really knows what we'll get. So in the meantime I'm going to finish my cup of skinny brew (the only coffee to actually give me energy) and share with you this quilt I've been working on for a few years.
So I started the Sparkle Quilt (instructions and video were found on youtube) by Missouri Star Quilt Company (Jenny is so fun to watch!) back in 2017 when I was still living in KY. Then later that year I made the move to Colorado and didn't have the space the first 6-7 months to have my sewing machine out which wasn't fun y'all. By the time I had my own place I was working full time and didn't have the time or energy to do anything else. Fast forward to about 7 months ago when I lost my job and decided to restart my craft business and let me tell you it's SCARY but it'll be so worth it one day!
I know, your thinking 7 months and your just starting to work on it again? I've done a few blocks here and there but I actually finished 7 doing this blog! Which means I only have 3 left until all 30 blocks are pieced together! I think I was in my head a little about getting back into the grove of it but once I started it was easy and fast to get them put together. Take a look at the photos below to see how I put one together. Now I am making mine a queen size, the one done on the tutorial is 78 1/2 x 83.
I started out with 150 5 inch squares of colored fabric, 120 5 inch squares of black and gold fabric (background fabric) and 240 3 inch squares of the black and gold fabric (background fabric). I chain pieced the 3 inch squares onto the 5 inch colored squares and that's what is pictured above.
I always start out by laying the block out and getting it how I want it. Normally I rearrange it a few times before I have it like I want it. Then I started sewing the rows together, 3 at a time, and I used a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
Once I had the first row together I pressed the seams to face outwards. You want to make every other row face one direction and the others to face the other so the seams will fit together.
The middle section was pressed with the seams facing inward.
The bottom section was pressed with seams facing outwards. Then it was time to sew the rows together. I pinned them together at the seams and used a 1/4 inch seam allowance.
I pressed the bottom seam towards the bottom and the top seam towards the top.
Just like that a block is done! It literally takes no time to put a block together. So far sewing the 3 inch squares on to the 5 inch has taken the longest. I still have to trim all the blocks up which I'll do when the last three are done.
Y'all this is my first bed size quilt I will have done so I definitely know it's not going to be perfect but I am so proud of how its turning out! I can't wait for y'all to come back in a few weeks and see the progress.
What about you guys, do you sew? If so, what have you been working on? Please leave a comment or message us if you have an idea for a project we should do!
Now go out and be creative friends and enjoy your weekend!
Megan
